Crackers are delicious and we usually buy them in bags or boxes. What many people don’t realize is that crackers are not difficult to make at home. With just a few basic ingredients, you will have homemade crackers before you know it.
Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour or you can mix all-purpose with some whole grain flour
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 4 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup water
  • Optional topping ingredients like sesame seeds, fennel seeds, poppy seeds, and salt

Method:

  • Heat your oven to 450 degrees F. Place the rack on the lower third of your oven. Sprinkle some flour on the baking sheet and set it aside.
  • Mix the dry ingredients together in a medium bowl. Use a whisk to mix them thoroughly.
  • Add the water and oil to the flour mixture. Stir until you create a sticky and soft dough. If there is a lot of flour at the bottom of the bowl, add a small amount of water and mix. Repeat this until all the flour is mixed in.
  • Divide your dough into two halves. Sprinkle some flour onto a clean surface and place one half of the dough down. Pat the dough into a square shape with your hands.
  • Roll out the dough until it is 1/8 inch or thinner.
  • Sprinkle your topping of choice on top.
  • Cut the dough into cracker-sized squares. A pizza cutter works well as do cookie cutters.
  • Transfer your crackers to the baking sheet and prick using a fork. A metal spatula works well for lifting them. The pricking helps prevent the crackers from puffing up.
  • Bake your crackers for 12 – 15 minutes or until the edges are browned. The thinner the crackers, the faster they will bake. Remove crackers that are baked and continue baking any unbaked ones.
  • Roll out and cut the remaining dough so that it’s ready for baking as soon as the first batch is done.
  • Put the baked crackers on a wire rack until they cool. They do become more crisp when they cool down. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
