When it comes to enjoying wine, tastes may vary but there are a few important guidelines to follow. Not only does this apply to white and red wines, but sweet wines too. If you want to make the most of a bottle of fine wine, it’s good to do your research first.
Moscato
This is one of the most popular sweet wines. It is usually enjoyed as an aperitivo or after a delicious meal. Moscato is known for its rich fruity flavours that come from these specific grapes. In Italy, it’s quite traditionally acceptable to serve Moscato with characteristic, mini sandwiches, and olives. Alternatively, if you prefer to finish you meal with this wine, you can serve it with cake.
Sauternes
This is a somewhat more expensive wine and loved for its wonderful sweetness. The grapes are left on the vine longer. They are harvested late in the season to ensure that the grapes are as ripe and sweet as possible. The flavours range from fresh flowers to baked peaches. This is a great wine to pair with some delicious pie or a strong-smelling cheese.
Ice Wine
An exceptionally unique type of wine, these grapes are harvested in the winter. The frozen grapes are then pressed with heavy duty presses to extract the sweet juice. It’s important to know that there are some “fakes” on the market. These winemakers try to trick the tastebuds by freezing grapes once they have been harvested, pressing them, and adding sugar. Genuine ice wine comes from Canada, the Finger Lakes, or Germany. Sometimes the grapes don’t ripen before they freeze and this means that ice wine cannot be made. This is what makes ice wine such a rare treat. Serve with some delicious cheesecake and you will definitely impress your guests!
Port
Fortified wine made in the Douro Valley in Portugal. Perfect for serving with various pies as well as blue cheese. There are two main styles of Port. These are Tawny and Ruby. Tawny Port is older and more expensive.
