Gingerbread is a popular treat for the festive season. This recipe is not only easy but you can also bake gingerbread in any shape you like. You can make gingerbread men, a gingerbread house, or even fun Christmas trees if you like! Not only are they great for the festive season but they are also excellent for serving to any expected or unexpected guests.
Ingredients:

  • 175g dark muscovado sugar
  • 100g butter
  • 85g golden syrup
  • 350g plain flour and some for dusting
  • 1tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 Tbsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 egg (beaten)

Method:

  • Melt the butter, sugar, and golden syrup together in a saucepan. Allow to bubble for 1 – 2 minutes and leave to cool for 10 minutes.
  • In a bowl mix the flour, bicarbonate of soda and spices.
  • Add the warm syrup mixture to the dry mixture.
  • Add the beaten egg to this mixture.
  • Knead together gently until smooth.
  • Wrap I cling film and chill for 30 minutes.
  • Remove the dough from the refrigerator and leave out until soft.
  • Preheat the oven to 180C.
  • Line two baking trays with parchment paper.
  • Roll out the dough to a thickness of a £1 coin.
  • Cut out your shapes as needed and re-roll the rest to cut out more shapes.
  • Place on the trays and bake for 10 – 12 minutes.
  • Once they are halfway through cooked, let them cool on the trays for 5 minutes.
  • Cool on a wire rack before decorating.
  • Allow to dry for up to 2 hours before tucking in.
