Whether you have never tried red wine or you have tried a few and you were not completely satisfied, there are a number of wines that are better suited for beginners. The same goes for those who want to send a wine gift to somebody who has minimal wine drinking experience.
One of the most popular types of red wine for beginners is Spanish Garnacha. This wine has hints of cherry, orange, and raspberry. It has a moderate level of acidity and delightful fruity flavours. This makes it particularly great for first time red wine drinkers.
California Zinfandel is another great choice for beginners. With hints of cinnamon, chocolate, and raspberry, this wine generally has a higher alcohol content at about 15%. There is a definite spice element to this wine ad there is a lower perception of the tannin levels in the wine.
A South Australian Shiraz is known for its notes of pepper, coffee, blueberry, and blackberry. This single-variety wine has a bolder flavour which means that it’s not the perfect starter wine but it’s certainly the next step up. So, once you feel like you have managed to acquire the taste for some of the beginner wines, you can then move on to this bottle.
If you are looking for a wine with interesting notes of roasted meat and smoke, then a bottle of Spanish Monastrell is for you. This is another bold variety of wine that is best tried once you have already tried and enjoyed some of the bottles mentioned above.
From here, you can move onto wines with higher tannins like a California Petite Sirah, a herby Chilean Carmenere. Once you have successfully tasted your way through these delicious red wines, you can expand your wine tasting to include another fruity, spicy, or high tannin wine if you like. If you try the first few bottles and find that you are not particularly a fan of any wine with a high level of tannins, then you know what your taste buds prefer.
