While an ice cold beer is a great treat in the heat of summer, mulled beer is the perfect winter treat for beer lovers. Best of all, you can make this delicious drink at home. Here’s how:
You will need:

  • 350 to 475ml beer
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 pinch ground ginger
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1 pinch ground cloves
  • 2 pinches ground cinnamon
  • 1 Tbsp honey
  • 1 egg yolk

Method:

  • Pour the beer into a small saucepan on your stove.
  • Add all the spices.
  • Warm the beer on a medium-low heat. If it starts to boil, turn the heat down.
  • The beer will probably develop foam but it will subside on its own within a couple of minutes.
  • Separate the egg and place the yolk into a small bowl.
  • Add sugar to the egg yolk and beat with a fork or whisk until it becomes almost white in colour.
  • Before adding the egg to the mixture, you should temper it. This is done by adding a couple of tablespoons of the warm beer mixture to the egg and mixing it slowly and thoroughly.
  • Now that the egg has warmed up from adding the beer, you can safely add it (slowly) to the pot of warm beer.
  • Continue to heat the beer for another 5 minutes while stiring gently.
  • Add honey to taste.
  • If you are concerned about possible pieces of egg that may have formed or if you added whole spices instead of the ground varieties, then you should strain the mulled beer before you serve it.
  • Enjoy right away!

Another good tip to remember when preparing mulled beer is to do so in small batches. Particularly if you have never enjoyed this beverage before or if this is your first time making it yourself. Mulled beer has a distinct beer taste with several other flavours all blended together. It’s also a good idea to sweeten gradually and taste in between. You don’t want to make this drink too sweet. Enjoy this drink while enjoing the warm glow of your fireplace or take a stroll around your garden in the middle of winter with some mulled beer to keep you warm!
