Whether you have recently received a gift hamper with biscuits or you have simply stocked up on your favourites, storage is always essential. Sealed packages of biscuits should be stored in cool, dry places which is generally quite easy to ensure. Once you open the package, however, you might be tempted to eat them all just to prevent them from going stale. Once food comes into contact with air, certain reactions occur and this can affect the flavour and texture of the food. So, when you have one or more open packages of cookies to store, here are some important tips to remember:
Soft cookies must be stored in containers that are completely sealed. By keeping moisture out, you will ensure that the humidity in the air is not absorbed by the cookies. Soft cookies are delicious but, if they soak up the moisture in the air, they can become really soggy and unappetising.
Harder biscuits should be stored in containers with lids that are easy to remove. Just the right amount of ventilation can help keep these biscuits crisp and hard. Of course, you don’t want to leave them out on the table for days or they can lose their flavour and crispy texture.
If you need to layer your cookies in a jar, you should separate each layer with a sheet of wax paper. This prevents them from sticking to one another and from breaking apart when you try to take one or more out. You should also avoid mixing your cookies! Place each flavour in a separate container. A biscuit with a stronger flavour can affect the flavour of other cookies with a more mild flavour.
Should you wish to freeze your cookies, you should make sure that they are placed in a freezer-safe plastic bag and then in an airtight container. This helps prevent smells from affecting the flavour of your biscuits.
Always keep your biscuits in a cool, dry place and never place them in the sun. If the sun shines on the cookie container for an extended period of time, it can case condensation to form inside the jar or container and this will certainly affect the quality of the biscuits.
