Beer is a delicious beverage that is made even better when served at just the right temperature. Different types of beer have different flavours and aromas that really stand out when they reach optimum temperature. So, when you serve beer, here are some tips to remember regarding the right temperature. One of the most common misconceptions is that English beer is served at room temperature. This type of beer is, in fact, served at cellar temperature (12 – 14 degrees Celcius) while room temperature is 21 degrees.

Most beers

When you serve beer, it is usually best served somewhere between cellar temperature and ice cold. This makes the drink more refreshing and it also lessens the bitterness. Of course, there are some beers that should be served somewhat warmer.

Coldest beers

American, Canadian, Scandinavian Cider, Cream Ale, Golden Ale and Pale Lager should be served between 0 and 4 degrees. Pilsners, fruit beers, strong European Lagers and Duvel-type beers should be enjoyed between 4 and 7 degrees.

Serve somewhat warmer

If you want to serve beer like Amber Ale, Stout, Golden Ale, Irish Ale, Belgian Ale, English-style Golden Ale and French or Spanish Cider, you should chill them to 8 – 12 degrees.

Increase the temperature

English Cider, bitter beers, English Pale Ales and Strong Ales should be served between 12 and 14 degrees. When you serve beer at this temperature, you can refer to it as cellar temperature.

Warmest of all

You can serve beer like Imperial Stout, Mead and Barley Wine at temperatures ranging from 14 to 16 degrees. There are even spiced winter ales that can be enjoyed as hot as 70 degrees.

When you send beer as a gift to somebody special, it is important that you know how each type is best enjoyed. If you know that the intended recipient prefers to serve beer very cold, this will help you select the best beers for their preferences.
