If you have already heard of something called a fondue, you might think of it as a group of people sitting around a pot of hot oil cooking their own food. Yes, oil fondues are excellent social opportunities and, yes, you will cook your meat and vegetables in the boiling oil. However, there are also other types of fondues including chocolate and cheese. If you want to present your guests with a cheese fondue, this is how to do it best.
Prepare your pot
Before you can begin preparing your cheese fondue, you will need to get the pot ready. Do this by rubbing it a clove of garlic. This will ensure that the flavour of the garlic will gently blend with your cheese sauce. You will need to place this pot in another pot with water and then place it on your stove. When it comes to making something sticky lick cheese sauce, you should always use the double boiler method to prevent burning.
Add white wine
White wine will become the base of the sauce for your cheese fondue. It is important because it prevents the cheese from clumping together. If you are concerned about the alcohol content of the wine, not to worry. As you boil the wine and melted cheese, the alcohol will evaporate. For every pound of cheese, you will need approximately one cup of wine.
Grate the cheese
While the wine is warming up, you have time to grate your cheese. A food processor can help make this process a lot easier. Especially if you are in a hurry or if you have a large number of guests and a lot of sauce to make. Once your cheese is grated, toss it around in some cornstarch. This is good for preventing clumps and it thickens the sauce nicely. It also help ensure that the cheese and wine blend properly.
Gradually add the cheese
Add just a handful of cheese at a time. Sprinkle over the top of your hot, but not boiling, wine. Stir constantly and slowly until blended. Next, you can add another handful of grated cheese. Continue until you have added all the cheese to your cheese fondue sauce.
Lemon juice
Next, you should add just a splash of lemon juice to the sauce. It will help maintain the right texture and it takes a little bit of the heaviness out of the sauce. So, if you can’t usually handle rich or heavy foods, this is an essential step when preparing your cheese fondue.
Time to season
Now it’s time to finish it all off with some salt and pepper. White pepper is good if you don’t like the black speckles of black pepper. Both work just as well so it’s more a visual preference than anything else. As for adding salt, rather add just a little bit at a time and taste as you go. You can always add more but you cannot remove salt that has already been added.
When your sauce is ready, you are ready to serve that delicious cheese fondue! There are a number of amazing foods you can dip in this scrumptious sauce. Some of the most popular examples include different types of meat, cooked potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower and anything that tastes good with cheese or cheese sauce. You should also have some bread or toast on hand for your guests to enjoy along with all the foods you are serving. Remember, keep your cheese sauce at the right temperature to ensure proper consistency. If it cools down too much it will become stiff but if it’s too hot, it will be very watery.
