Baskets come in all shapes and sizes. They are even available in a variety of materials – including rope. If you have ever wanted to try making your own rope basket, you’re in luck because it’s super easy! You can even adapt this method to make smaller baskets from string.
You will need:
- Container to use as a mould (like a bucket)
- Parchment paper to cover the container and tape
- Rope of your choice (thicker rope is better for larger baskets and thinner rope for smaller ones)
- Hot glue gun OR wood glue if you plan on making a small basket with string
Method:
- Start by covering your container with parchment paper and use some tape to hold it in place. Obviously, you only need to cover the exterior.
- Start by creating the base of your basket. To do this, you need to apply some glue to the one end and loop it back and secure in place.
- Continue wraping the rope around in a circle until you create the right size for the bottom of the basket. Use hot glue to every now and then to keep the rope in place.
- Continue up around the sides of the container and make sure that each layer is pressed up firmly against the lower one. Again, use glue to secure in place.
- Once you reach the top rim, you will need to trim the rope and glue the end in place.
- If you like, you can add handles using leather straps and hot glue.
- Once the glue has set, remove the container and parchment paper.
- If you want to make a string basket, you can dip the string in some wood glue and wrap it around the parchment paper covered container. Allow the glue to dry and remove the container just like the rope basket.
