Every season brings with it a change in diet. Our bodies need different nutrients and we tend to opt for “lighter” foods when the weather is warmer. If you are hosting a party or event during the spring season, you should consider setting up a delicious cheese board. Just like any other types of food, there are certain kinds of cheese that are particularly suitable for this time of year.
Start with a semi-soft goat’s milk cheese. Its clean flavour and light acidity of this cheese makes it must on every spring cheese board. The softer texture of this cheese also makes it particularly pleasing.
Next, select a semi-firm cow’s milk cheese. You don’t want a cheese that’s too hard and you should look for one with an especially creamy taste and texture. This is often the favourite on the plate so make sure that you have extra in your fridge!
For something with a stronger aroma and flavour, choose a creamy and dense goat cheese. Since this cheese has a strong smell, you might want to place it on a separate board. This is to prevent the aroma from affecting that of the other cheeses you’re serving.
Finally, some whole milk ricotta should certainly be on the menu! With a silky texture, this cheese will roll over your tongue and your taste buds will delight in that milky flavour.
Don’t forget, you should always remove your cheese from the fridge in advance. It should warm up slowly in order to offer the most flavour and best texture. You don’t want warm cheese but, at the same time, if it’s chilled, it will not have the same taste.
Serve a selection of breads and crackers with every cheese board. Keep them simple so that they complement the cheeses without altering or overpowering the flavour. In other words, opt for lightly salted crackers rather than those with extra ingredients like tomato, herbs, or olive oil. If you like, you can serve these items on the side and allow your guests to serve themselves.
