Baked apples are delicious! Especially during the colder months when our sweet cravings are even stronger. This scrumptious apple recipe doesn’t only taste great but the floral design will wow your guests too!
Ingredients:

  • 1 large red apple (cored and thinly sliced)
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp water
  • 1 tsp powder sugar (optional)

Method:

  • Preheat your oven to 200 degrees C.
  • Grease two ramekins (6 – 8 oz) and dust with some white sugar.
  • Place the apple slices on a plate and allow them to overlap slightly if necessary.
  • Microwave the apple slices on high for approximately 45 seconds to soften them just a little bit.
  • Cover the plate of warm apple slices with some plastic wrap and a kitchen towel.
  • Mix the sugar and cinnamon together in a bowl.
  • Roll out the puff pastry to a thickness of less than 1/8 inch.
  • Use a pizza cutter to cut out two 3-inch x 12-inch rectangles. Keep the rest of the pastry for later.
  • Spread the melted butter over the dough and top with a good helping of cinnamon-sugar. Place the apple slices along one of the long edges of the dough. Allow the slices to overlap one another slightly and continue ¼ inch over the edge of the dough.
  • Fold the other end of the dough up so that half of the apple slices are wrapped in dough.
  • Beat the egg together with water in a bowl and paint this mixture on the dough.
  • Sprinkle cinnamon-sugar on top of the egg wash.
  • Roll the dough up starting from one end and working slowly until you reach the other end. Don’t roll too tightly and seal with a strip of dough.
  • If need be, fluff the apple slices to create a perfect rose design.
  • Place the rose into a prepared ramekin and sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar.
  • Once all of your apple roses are ready, place them in the preheated oven on the middle rack.
  • Bake until browned. This usually takes about 45 minutes.
  • Remove the ramekins with tongs and allow to cool for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Once cooled, remove your baked apple roses from the dishes and dust with powder sugar before serving.
