During the colder winter months, we tend to crave rich foods and desserts. When temperatures rise and the weather becomes more comfortable, we don’t feel the need for all that sugar. Instead, we prefer lighter desserts that will leave us feeling satisfied but not too bloated.
Probably one of the most popular options is the versatile fruit salad. Fruit salad can be made using a variety of fresh fruits and you can even add some canned fruit if you prefer. In fact, the syrup in the fruit cans will also add some much needed sweetness if the fresh fruit you use has a bit of a sour taste (like kiwis). You can top your salad with ice cream or fresh cream if you like but it’s not a must. Many people prefer to leave the salad as is.
Homemade sorbet is also a great refreshing dessert loved by people of all ages. Both young and old enjoy the fresh fruity flavour and the cool sensation as it glides down their throat. Sorbet can be made using just about any kind of fresh or canned fruit. It’s a healthier option than creamy ice cream and it won’t leave you feeling nearly as guilty when you dish up a second portion!
If you love chocolate but you don’t want to overdo it, you can serve a dark chocolate fondue. Serve with fresh fruit for dipping, dark chocolate is the healthiest option when it comes to chocolate since it is rich in cocoa rather than fat.
If you are craving ice cream, you can still enjoy it without overindulging. Skip the rich syrups and sauces and top with fresh fruit instead. Vanilla ice cream tastes great with just about any kind of fruit but you can also top strawberry ice cream with mixed berries for example.
Finally, if you have popsicle molds or even a spare ice tray, you can use fresh fruit juice to make your own popsicles! These are great for kids in particular and they don’t cost a fortune to make!
