When summer arrives, there’s no more delicious dessert than a fresh fruit salad! All the right flavours and colours make this dish a feast for the eyes and your taste buds! That said, it’s important to understand that some fruits are suitable and others are not. There are some fruits that should always be added to your fruit salad while others should only be enjoyed separately or as part of a fruit platter.

Blueberries are delicious and they are great if you can get a mouthful. Unfortunately, if you add them to a fruit salad, they can be quite delicate and any mixing or even light tossing can cause them to burst and discolour the other fruit in the bowl. In addition, if you enjoy a single blueberry along with a mouthful of other fruit, you will hardly enjoy its flavour. In addition, blueberries tend to spoil faster than other types of fruit so you wouldn’t really want to keep any leftovers for the following day.

Canteloupe and Honeydew are quite similar and they can work well for colour and as a kind of filler but they should only be added in small quantities. This is because their flavour is generally overpowered by other types of fruit and you might not get the full flavour of these melons if they are paired with other, stronger flavoured fruits. So, feel free to add either or a bit of both but beware not to overdo it. As far as melons go, watermelon is the number one choice. It’s juicy, sweet, and it adds amazing colour to any fruit salad. Watermelon is a must! Try to get rid of as many seeds as possible or, if possible, shop around for the seedless variety.

Pineapple is a must for some but not for all. While there are those who love the taste of fresh pineapple, others can’t stand the idea of having to clean and core. You can buy fresh pineapple slices if you want to skip all the cleaning or you can leave pineapple off the menu. That said, you will be missing out on some amazing flavour.

Grapes are another juicy staple in many fruit salads. If possible, make sure that you get the seedless variety. There are few things worse than enjoying a sweet fruit salad only to bite into some bitter grape seeds. If you have the time, and patience, you could slice your grapes in half to remove the seeds but this is quite time-consuming.

Remember, fruits like banana, apple, and pear, might sound great and they are delicious but they are affected by oxygen and will start to turn brown sooner rather than later. This can make a scrumptious fresh fruit salad look old and unappealing in no time!
