Whether somebody sent you a picnic basket hamper years ago or you have an old basket taking up space in the shed or garage, there’s always a better option than throwing it away. Wicker baskets have amazing character and they can be used in so many amazing ways!
Shelves
One of the best ways of adding a creative touch to any room is by attaching wicker baskets to your walls and using them as shelves. You will need to remove the lid and secure the base of the basket to the wall. These baskets are great for storing and displaying items that aren’t too heavy. While the basket is not likely to break overnight, heavy weight can cause it to bend. Bath towels, toilet paper, photo frames, and other lightweight objects are perfect!
Drawers
If you have a table with shelves or you have some extra space under your bead, you can use wicker baskets as drawers! Simply measure the space you have available to make sure that your basket will fit. Like shelves, it’s best to remove the lids of your baskets for easy access. If you use them on the floor under your bed or in other similar spaces, you can even fit some wheels to the bottom of the basket to prevent them from scratching your floors.
Toy box
Kids always seem to collect an unbelieveable amount of toys. This can be a real problem when it comes to space. Put your old picnic basket to use and turn it into a toy box! You can even paint it to make cleaning up time fun for your little one.
Craft box
Tired of your art supplies ending up all over the house? Turn your wicker picnic basket into your very own arts and crafts storage bin! Pack smaller items in shoe boxes and similar containers to keep everything even more organised.
Book display
Encourage reading in your home by keeping your favourite books on display! A picnic basket is great for this. You can place the basket beside your favourite arm chair, in your bedroom, or anywhere you like to relax.
Store fine crockery
If you want to keep your finest set of crockery in perfect condition, it’s important to store each piece with care. You could pack everything in a picnic basket and insert bubble wrap in between for added protection. Alternatively, you could insert and secure thin pieces of wood in an upright position inside the basket. Doing this creates individual slots and each plate will have its very own space!
Potted plants
If your picnic basket isn’t in the best condition, you can still put it to great use. Potted plants can be arranged inside your basket but make sure that they all have drip trays to prevent your basket from getting soaked every time you water your plants. If your plants are small or short, you can place some kind of support under the pot. A block of polystyrene or even a block of wood will work wonders!
With all of these ideas in mind, there really is no reason to toss that old picnic basket. Put it to good use and make your house feel even more like a home!
