Just like food, the type of beverages we enjoy in the summer are very different from those we prefer in the colder winter months. The type of wine that tastes good with a warm winter meal might not be to your liking in the heat of summer. In fact, alcohol tends to make you feel even warmer unless you choose the right drinks and serve them in the right way,
When you’re looking for the perfect summer wine, you should avoid anything with a complex, heavy, or oak flavour. Examples of these kinds of wines include Cabernet Sauvignons, Super Tuscans, and Syrahs. The wines you should look for include those with a lower alcohol content, lower acidity, and light fruity flavours.
Some good examples of wines that you should consider for summer include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, or White Burgundy. Rose wines or sparkling whites are also excellent for the summer. Any wine with a light and crisp flavour and a hint of fruitiness are great options!
Sauvignon Blanc grapes are associated with citrus flavours which make them very refreshing. The Muscat grape is used to make Moscato and it too is very light with a delicious aroma. These wines pair up really well with fresh fruit which is an added bonus since summer calls for lighter meals and snacks too.
Whenever serving wine in summer, you should keep in mind the serving temperature. Chill your wine in the fridge before serving and place the bottle back in the fridge or in a bucket of ice. While some might say that you should add ice to the glass, this will water the wine down. There are some great reusable plastic ice cubes that will help chill your wine without watering it down so you can use these if you’re in a bit of a bind.
