When you want to spoil somebody special with a gorgeous gift that they will be able to use time and time again, look no further than a picnic basket. There are many to choose from and you can opt for one with two place settings, four, or even six. They normally also come with a bunch of treats like snacks and possibly even a bottle of win. That said, if you want to add to the surprise, you can pack these foods in and take your loved one out for a few hours to your favourite scenic spot!

Light snacks
Check the basket to make sure that it includes some kind of snack. Crisps and nuts are great for snacking while you chat and take in your surroundings. The most important thing to remember here is what your friend or loved one will enjoy. If they absolutely love a particular type of crisps but you’re not all that keen, you should include a bag of their favourites as well as something for yourself.

Finger foods
Picnic sets often come with knives, forks and spoons. These come in handy when you want to eat a fresh salad or when you buy an ice cream while you’re out but you don’t feel like using the almost microscopic spoon they love to hand out. If you are packing your own special picnic lunch, it’s time to think of all your favourite finger foods. Things like meatballs, chicken wings, sandwiches, and even boiled eggs are all great protein options. You can serve them with salad items that don’t necessarily require the use of a knife and fork, such as cherry tomatoes, carrot sticks, celery sticks, cucumber, and so on.

Refreshments
Drinks are essential for any picnic and, again, it will depend on your personal preferences. Don’t forget to brew a fresh pot of coffee, tea, or even hot chocolate and pour it in a thermos to take along for the ride. It should stay hot until you’re ready to enjoy. If you are driving, make sure that you opt for non-alcoholic beverages even if your friend or loved one chooses to drink wine or beer.

Sweet treats
Just like any meal, a picnic should always include something sweet. If you’re looking for healthy options, consider some fresh fruit or even a fruit salad. You can also take some biscuits, cakes, muffins, or anything you fancy. Don’t overdo it with the sweets, however, you might be quite full after all the snacks and finger foods! If you prefer, you can leave the sweets off the menu and visit a nearby ice cream vendor. This gives you an excuse to stretch your legs and walk off some of those calories!
