Apples are in abundance this time of year which is all the more reason to make the most of them. If you love apple crumble but you have never tried making it yourself, here is an easy recipe that will help you make the most delicious pie even if it is your first time.
Ingredients:
- 1 pie crust (frozen or homemade)
For the topping:
- 1 cup flour
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ cup white sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ cup butter (chilled and cubed)
For the filling:
- 8 apples (Granny Smith are delicious)
- ½ cup white sugar
- 3 Tbsp flour
- ½ Tbsp lemon juice
- ½ tsp lemon zest (optional)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground nutmeg
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
- To make the topping, mix all ingredients and use a fork to mix until combined and crumbly.
- For the filling, peel, core and slice the apples into thin slices.
- Toss the apple slices with flour, sugar, lemon juice and zest and finally with some cinnamon and nutmeg.
- Layer the apple slices over the pie shell and pour over any leftover lemon juice over the slices.
- Add the topping mixture on the top and pat down to firmly set in place.
- Place the pie dish on a baking tray to prevent a mess in your oven.
- Bake for 15 minutes before reducing the heat of your oven to 350 degrees F and baking for another 45 – 55 minutes.
- Poke the middle of the pie with a toothpick to see if it is done.
- Remove from the oven when done and allow to cool.
- This pie can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature. You can also top your apple crumble with whipped cream, ice cream or even caramel sauce.
As you can see, this apple crumble is really easy to make and you don’t need to be a baking expert. It does not require special baking tools or complicated techniques. This pie will be ready, from start to finish, in less than 2 hours and, if you bake ahead of time, you can always reheat it when your guests arrive.
