Drinking glasses come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.  While some might say that the glass doesn’t affect the quality of the drink, the truth is that the glass is more important that you may realise.  Whether enjoying a relaxing drink after work or hosting an event, you want to serve your beverage in the appropriate glass.

Wines
Red wine is best served in a larger glass.  Now, this does not mean that you should fill it to the brim!  Pour a regular amount in a large glass so that it has room to breathe without losing its aroma.
White wine is lighter than red and therefore better served in a taller glass with a narrow bowl.  This helps the aromas concentrate more.
Champagne is best served in a flute glass since this really shows off their bubbly nature.
As for port and sherry, they are often served before or after dinner in really small glasses.  They are meant to be sipped slowly and savoured.

Beer
There are different types of beer glasses so, you should make your selection based on the beer you are enjoying.  American beers are usually served in pilsner glasses or mugs.  Mugs suit darker brews while lighter varieties are best suited for pilsner glasses.  In Europe, there are even more glass styles available.

Cocktails
Tumblers are a popular choice for juice based cocktails that are not too high in alcohol.  Highball glasses are slightly smaller than tumblers and are perfect for cocktails with a slightly higher alcohol content.  Rocks classes are small, square shaped glasses in which high alcohol content cocktails are served as well as shots on the rocks.  Daiquiris and margaritas are commonly served in hurricane glasses.  Martini glasses are popular for a variety of drinks and always give the drinker that added touch of class!  Of course, no glass collection is complete without several shot glasses!  These are great for knocking back anything from a strong dose of rum or whisky to creamy coffee liqueurs.

So, the next time you enjoy or serve somebody a drink, make sure that you select the right glass! It really does make all the difference!
