Halloween has long been considered an American tradition. However, it is becoming more and more popular around the world and gives parents a great reason to start cooking. With so many sweets and chocolates out there, some home-made spooky cookies make a delicious and healthy change. The first thing to remember is to choose one or two of your favourite cookie recipes. Shortbread and chocolate chip cookies are two of the most popular options. Once the cookie dough is ready, it’s time to put the cookie cutters to work. If you’re feeling particularly creative, you can even cut them out by hand. Since cookie cutters are not available in certain shapes, in these cases it is essential to cut them by hand.
Ideas for shapes and colours:
- Ghost-shaped spooky cookies covered with white icing and decorated with black eyes and a scary mouth
- Flying bats or cat-shaped cookies coated with black icing.
- Bone-shaped cookies served with chocolate sauce for dipping. The chocolate sauce reminds us of blood.
- Pumpkin-shaped cookies covered with delicious orange icing
- Colourful ghosts (similar to those in the Pac-Man game) with goofy eyes. Use a white paste topped with a black dot to create the eyes.
- Make normal round cookies and dip half in white chocolate and the other half in milk chocolate. Once the chocolate has set, draw a white chocolate web on the milk chocolate side and draw a little spider with milk chocolate on the white chocolate half. The spider should appear to be walking on the web.
- Make your own cookie spider by baking some chocolate cookies and sticking two on top of each other with frosting. Use shoestring black licorice for the legs and a couple of small red sweets or glazed cherry for the eyes.
When making spooky cookies for Halloween, the most important thing is to let your imagination run wild! Colour plays a big role in these cookie designs, so even if you’re on a slightly tight budget, you shouldn’t skimp on food colouring.
