Halloween is the perfect time of year to get creative when serving snacks. There are so many great ideas that will have everyone in the house asking for more! Remember, since we typically enjoy an overdose of sugar this time of year, it’s also good to balance it out a bit with healthy Halloween treats.
Eggs
Boil some eggs, remove the yolks and mix them with a little mustard and/or mayonnaise. Add turmeric or another mild-flavoured orange spice to give the egg yolks an orange colour and fold them back into the egg whites. Shape them into pumpkins and add a sprig of parsley for the stem of the pumpkin. These are delicious and nutritious Halloween treats.
Cheese crackers
Choose your favourite crackers and top them with ghost-shaped cheese scraps. Cut up some cheddar cheese or your favourite hard cheese and then cut out little ghosts. Use poppy seeds to make the eyes and mouth.
Banana sweets
Peel a banana and then cut it in half. Insert a wooden stick into the banana and freeze it. Now cover with white chocolate. Add the milk chocolate eyes and freeze again before serving these Halloween treats.
Candy corn alternative
Instead of all that sugar, choose fruit! Chop up some pineapple and place it in a whiskey glass, add some chopped oranges or similar citrus fruit and then top with some fresh whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
Fun apples
Cut an apple into quarters and then cut a piece from the outside edge (centre) to create a gaping mouth. Add candy or chocolate eyes, a slice of strawberry for the tongue and a few pieces of white candy for the teeth. These Halloween treats are great for the young and young at heart.
These are just a few great ideas for you to consider when making your Halloween treats. They are great for parties and for encouraging your younger family members to enjoy healthier options rather than handfuls of chocolates and sweets.
