When you visit a bar, you will notice that they have a wide variety of drinking glasses. Each beverage is served in a different glass and it’s not only for the sake of appearances. It is also due to the quantity of the beverage and, some drinks need to breathe before you enjoy them. Here’s what you need to know about some of the most popular glasses and which beverages they are designed to hold.

Wine glasses

Not all wine glasses are the same. You will notice that red wine glasses are larger than white wine glasses and this is because your red wines need some extra room to breathe. They are known for their significantly stronger aromas and flavours which need to interact with the surrounding air in order for the flavours to truly come out as they roll over your tongue. Apart from these drinking glasses, you also need to remember that there are champagne glasses, or flutes, too. The reason for their design is to ensure that the beverage holds on to as many bubbles for as long as possible. The small opening at the top ensures that there is a smaller surface area exposed to the surrounding air. You should use these glasses for all types of sparkling wine.

Beer glasses

There are a number of types of beer glasses and the best option will depend on the type of beer you are serving. American beers are best served in mugs or pilsner glasses. Mugs are often used to serve darker brews while pilsner glasses are the top choice for lighter beers. If you visit a bar dedicated to serving beer alone, you will notice that there are even more glasses and even the famous boot which is a fun challenge for beer lovers.

Serving cocktails

Drinking glasses designed for cocktails are some of the most beautiful of all. There are a number of styles available and this is usually because of the fact that some cocktails can be defined as long drinks while others are stronger yet contain fewer millilitres. Daiquiris and margaritas can be served in larger hurricane glasses while your martini will be served in a martini glass, of course. Other similar cocktails are also served in martini glasses since they also have a high alcohol content and the same quantity as a martini. Shot glasses, of course, are for those quick shots of your favourite drink. Some may contain more than one type of alcohol while others stick to just one – like tequila.

When serving drinks at home, make sure that you offer your guests their beverages in the appropriate drinking glasses. You wouldn’t want to serve wine in a whisky glass! Not only will it ruin the appearance of the beverage, but it will also force your guest to hold the glass and, therefore, warm the wine as they drink.
