While many people associate Halloween with sweets and chocolates, it can be really fun to get creative with healthier options like fruit. There are so many great ways of turning ordinary fruit into something spooky and this will make them even more appealing to children and encourage healthy habits. Here are some delicious and nutritious Halloween fruit ideas.
Carved Orange Halloween Fruit Salad
These are fun and easy to make if you have some basic carving skills. All you need is an orange (or a few if you are making several bowls) and a selection of fruit. Cut a fun design into the side of the orange just as you would a pumpkin. Then cut the top off the orange and hollow it out to use as a bowl. Cut your fruit and mix in a bowl before filling the hollow orange with mixed fruit.
Sliced Apple Monsters
These are super fun and they are convenient snacks too. Take a green apple and slice it into wedges. Cut out a portion of the apple on the side where the skin is to create an open mouth. Now add a strawberry slice as a tongue and insert some raw sunflower seeds as teeth at the top of the mouth. You can also get creative with the eyes by using icing sugar, chocolate or whatever you like. A little bit of candy won’t hurt.
Mummified Bananas
Slice your bananas and place them on sticks. Now drizzle them with caramel (the kind that will get hard) or even milk chocolate if you prefer. Add a candy eye using icing pens, fondant or whatever you prefer. These are one of the easiest Halloween fruit treats to make with minimal ingredients and effort.
Jack-O-Lantern Halloween Fruit Bowl
All you need for this fun plate is a few oranges, some apples and a dark fruit like black grapes or blueberries. Slice your apples and oranges into wedges. Create the base with the oranges and make sure that they are facing rind side up. Leave space for the mouth, nose and eyes. For the mouth, you will need to add the apple wedges with the skin side down. For the eyes and nose, you can add your dark berries or black grapes. Use some green apple wedges to create the stem at the top of the pumpkin. Make sure that these apples have the skin on top so that the green colour is clearly visible. If you are worried about your apples turning brown, remember to dip them in some lemon water before putting them in the bowl. You can also make the bowl and leave the apples for last. Slice and add your apples just before serving for maximum freshness.
There you have several delicious and fun Halloween fruit ideas that your family and friends will love! You can be sure that even the older children and probably adults will get a kick out of these designs. They will most likely want to nibble on them too!
