Shopping for an expecting or new mother can be a little tricky. Especially for those who do not have children of their own. The good news is that you only need to consult this list of things you should avoid when shopping for new mother gifts.
No alcohol
Under any other circumstances, champagne or wine may certainly be in order. Alcohol is not in the best interests of the baby or mum for that matter. If you send a hamper with a bottle of wine or any kind of alcohol, it can upset her rather than make her happy.
Beware of gift cards
If you want to send a gift card, make sure that you send one for a baby store rather than a clothing shop for mum. Many mothers struggle to regain their pre-baby figures and many do not at all. Shopping for clothing is not likely to bring them joy when they cannot fit into their usual size. On the other hand, accessories are always a winner and will make her feel beautiful.
What baby needs
Depending on how well mum has prepared, she might already have a few outfits for baby. One extra cute grower will not hurt of course. Just keep in mind that babies grow extremely quickly so they might only get through their 0 – 3 month wardrobe a few times. Of course, mum will most certainly take loads of pictures so you can see how precious the newborn looks in the outfit you picked out.
Babies need plenty of things. It’s amazing how someone so tiny needs so much. From bibs and booties to hats and blankets, you can find everything you need when you shop for a new baby hamper. Make sure that you look at the image and check the description to find out exactly what is included.
Headache generators
Also known as noisy toys! These should be avoided for several reasons. Firstly, baby is far too young to appreciate the loud noise. Their little ears are still adjusting to all the new sounds and audio stimuli. Secondly, you are bound to give mum and dad a very big headache and it won’t take long before they hide that noisy toy somewhere for good.
Don’t play decorator
No matter how cute a particular item of furniture or linen may look, you need to leave the decorating up to mum and dad. They have most likely already planned the nursery from the earliest point of their pregnancy and you do not want to overstep. That said, a blanket for baby’s pram is not going to clash with the nursery décor.
Don’t forget, the gift you send is not only about baby. There are a couple of very tired parents who are also in need of some attention. If you are able to lend a hand around the house, watch the baby while they take a nap or help in any other way, this will always be the greatest gift of all.
