When you look up pie recipes, many of them call for a ready-made crust. You could buy a pie shell but, let’s face it, a fresh crust is so much better! Not only is it more delicious, but you also don’t have to worry about any misleading or deceptive food labels. With just a few ingredients, you can make your own pie crust and you’ll never need to buy one again!
Ingredients:
- 3 cups flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 ΒΌ cup butter or shortening
- 1 Tbsp vinegar
- 5 Tbsp ice cold water
- 1 egg
Method:
- In a bowl, beat the egg, vinegar and ice cold water. The water must be cold so that it does not melt the butter.
- Sift the flour and salt together in a separate bowl.
- Add the cold butter or shortening to the flour mixture. The butter should be cold and cut into pieces.
- Using a pastry blender or food processor you will need to mix these ingredients well.
- Cut the butter into the flour until they form pea-sized pieces. Try to work quickly so that the butter doesn’t melt.
- Add the egg, water and vinegar mixture to the flour mixture and stir loosely.
- Flip the dough out onto a clean surface and form a ball.
- Take care not to overmix or knead.
- Flatten the dough between two pieces of plastic wrap and chill in the fridge.
- Chill overnight and use this pie crust to make your favourite pie in the morning or the following afternoon! Chilled pie pastry is easier to roll and it always bakes better.
