Different types of alcohol have different storage requirements. Proper storage ensures that the bottle maintains its highest quality and best flavour. If improperly stored, alcohol can go bad or at least lose its aroma and taste. Here are some important alcohol storage tips.
Red wine is often stored before and after opening. Many people open a bottle and enjoy a glass or two before popping the cork back in. Whether the bottle is sealed or open, red wine should be stored in a cool place and in as dark a place as possible. The ideal temperature for red wine storage is between 45 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
White wine is not usually aged and it’s recommended that they are stored at 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. After opening, white wine is often best stored in the fridge but it should be consumed within a few days. Sparkling wine is also best chilled before and after opening.
As for beer, most bottles can be stored upright but those with corks should be stored on their sides. Like wine, if the corked bottle is not stored on its side, the cork can dry out and it will be difficult to open. When you open a beer, it’s best to enjoy it right away. Beer does not store well once opened. Unopened bottles can be stored between 45 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
Rum, vodka, whisky and other liquors can all be stored at room temperature regardless of whether they are opened or not. They are, however, best stored in a cool, dark place like a cupboard or liquor cabinet. Once a bottle is open, it’s best not to allow it to stand too long. It will lose its flavour, aroma, and all of the qualities that make the bottle so special and appealing.
With all of these alcohol storage tips in mind, you can set aside a special spot for each bottle to ensure that they maintain their best properties.
