Many wine hampers and wine gifts come packaged in lovely wine crates. Once you have popped the cork and consumed the contents of the fine bottle or bottles, you’ll be left with an empty crate. Now, instead of tossing it aside or even throwing it away, you can put one or more crates to great use around your home or even at the office.
Bedside table
Stack three crates on top of one another with the closed end up to create your very own bedside table. You can leave them as they are, paint them, or even apply a wood stain to obtain the perfect colour.
Higher table
If you only have one crate or you have two and you want to make two matching tables, you can simply attach wooden or metal legs and place the table wherever you need it the most.
Creative wall unit
Use several boxes to make your very own wall unit. Place some of them in an upright position and others in a sideways position for a more visually appealing result. You can use as many as you have and even add to your custom unit over time.
Shelves
Secure your painted or unpainted crate to the wall and use to display various items. Depending on the thickness and resistance of the box, you should decide between lightweight and slightly heavier items.
Seat or foot rest
Secure one crate on top of another and cover with a piece of foam and fabric. Use this box as a foot rest or an extra seat when you have guests.
Storage
You can place one box on top of the other with both open sides facing one another. One box will be the bottom of the box and the other will be the lid. Attach hinges to the back and a latch to the front of the box. You can use this box for storing anything from arts and crafts to spices and anything in between!
Tray
Cut the box down around the edges and add two handles to make your very own tray! You might want to sand down any imprefections and apply a layer of varnish for a smooth finish.
Pet bed
Cut out an entry point in the one long side of the crate and add your pet’s favourite pillow to encourage your furry friend to make themself at home!
Drawers
Use as drawers in a custom-built wood frame. You might want to attach a slide railing or small wheels to reduce friction and wear.
Plant holder
Depending on the size of your plants and the pots, you can either place them directly in the crate or you will need to add some kind of support to help lift them up a bit. Either way, plants look great in a wooden crate!
With all of these great ideas, you’ll never toss out your wine crates again! Remember, this is just the tip of the iceberg! Look around your home for more fun ways of putting old wine crates to use!
